Participating in one another's homesteading projects builds skills and community, strengthens the individual homesteads, and brings everyone closer to achieving food security for all Alaskans.
Whether it's raising a high tunnel, putting up firewood, mending fences, or tackling butchering day, extra hands make all the difference in our success and enjoyment of the process.
It all started for us when a group of five families decided to help one another get ready for winter by setting aside 1 day for each family to receive the help of all the others. We mowed lawns, logged trees, butchered chickens, organized a garage, and cleaned up high tunnels for the season. Where someone lacked the equipment for the job, others brought their own tools and skills to accomplish the task. Small children and teens were also involved. Through the process, we strengthened our relationships, and relieved one another's stress over those long winterization to-do lists.
We will match you with other families near you who have the skills and/ or willingness to help. In return, you will have the opportunity to likewise serve your neighbors in pursuit of our common goal of local food security.
Alaska Homestead Education wants to pair you with people in your area who are interested in work parties. Please email a description of your needs or specifics on the help you want to receive, to info@akhomestead.org.
